I want to share with you a beautiful excerpt from Future Proof by Diana Wu-David. Highlights mine:
Indeed, experimenting is a way to learn and it's a way to learn how we learn things. Having discrete trials to develop specific abilities, such as creating imagery and writing poetry, develops the process by which we know and understand how to learn.
This can apply to how we work - tools, environments, routines, collaborations - as well as what we work on. Leadership expert, Tara Mohr, calls this tuning your instrument. JJ Acuna, a talented artist and architect, calls this concept "finding the right tools to paint your life."
If you tried the small brush and that didn't work, maybe you need a roller. What colors should you use? What canvas and paint? This imagery has always stayed with me, applied in different situations. Consider your canvas. Do you need a dedicated workspace, or can you work from anywhere? Do you want to lead a team or work independently? Is working eighty-hour weeks exciting or draining? What works for you may not work for someone else, and that's fine. Your canvas, and your painting, is a personal choice that should be created to fit your life.
Enjoy painting,
